Stress & Anxiety
If your doctor has recommended that you relax or take it easy you may be suffering from a stress related disorder. It is estimated that up to 75 percent of all visits to physicians are from people with a stress related problem.
Stress may be a major factor in causing hypertension and coronary heart disease, migraine and tension headache, and immune and asthmatic conditions. It may lead to harmful habits such as smoking, drinking, or overeating, which have been shown to cause or intensify still other diseases. It is also suspected to aggravate chronic backache, arthritis, allergy, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, vertigo, and multiple sclerosis.
Dermatologists find that stress is a factor in many skin disorders such as hives, eczema, and dermatitis. It has also been strongly associated with many gastrointestinal disorders, including irritable colon and gastritis. Some of the excess hormones that the adrenal glands release during repeated stress responses can interfere with your body’s immunity to infection. You may then become more susceptible to bacteria and viruses such as flu virus.
The amount of stress which we experience in our day-to-day life affects our well-being. Stress not only affects our bodies, but it also affects the way we think, feel, and interact with others. The more stress we have to deal with, the more likely we are to struggle with emotional problems. The effects of long-term stress on our mental health can be devastating.
Most of us can bounce back from a bad day at work, school, or home, but we may be unable to do so if stress continues day after day.
Under long-term stress, our personalities may change. We may suffer from depression and feel hopeless, helpless and worthless. Occasionally we may feel tense and explosive.
Stress and anxiety also have a negative effect on relationships. When you are tense, it is difficult to truly listen to a partner, friend, or coworker and to understand the feelings or thoughts of others. When you are tense, you tend to be irritable and impatient. You talk from your tension rather than relax in the give and take of true communication.
Stress has a harmful effect on every dimension of our life. It wastes our energy and tires us out. It leads to health problems. Tension decreases mental efficiency and limits creativity. It constricts our relationships. Tension destroys our quality of life.
Anxiety & Panic Attacks
Panic attack is characterized by sudden episodes of acute apprehension or intense fear that occur out of the blue, without any apparent cause.
Anxiety affects your whole being. It is a physiological behavioral and psychological reaction all at once. On a physiological level, anxiety may include bodily reactions such as rapid heartbeat, muscle tension, queasiness, dry mouth, or sweating. On a behavioral level, it can sabotage your ability to act, express yourself, or deal with certain everyday situations.
- Reduce physiological reactivity
- Stop avoidance behavior
- Change subjective interpretations (or self-talk) which perpetuate a state of apprehension and worry
Anxiety can appear in different forms and at different levels of intensity. It can range in severity from a mere twinge of uneasiness to a full-blown panic attack marked by heart palpitations, disorientation, and terror. Anxiety that is not connected with any particular situation, that comes out of the blue, is called free-floating anxiety or, in more severe instances, a spontaneous panic attack.
